Health and safety

The health and safety of our travellers is always our first priority. Thanks to the expertise of our team and our thorough safety procedures, we’ve successfully helped thousands of people enjoy wildlife conservation experiences safely and confidently.

Safety in Africa - African Conservation Experience

Trusted public health and global travel advisory authorities

We closely monitor health and safety updates from the World Health Organisation (WHO), the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the IATA Travel Centre and local government advice from the countries where we operate.

As a member of the trusted travel brand ABTA, we are able to provide you with up-to-date advice and information when needed.

Continual risk assessment

We are certified Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) practitioners and carry out regular risk assessments of all our project sites, activities, accommodations and transfers.

As well as conducting health and safety assessments, we also assist our partner projects and transport providers in developing procedures that meet our strict standards for traveller safety.

First aid

We have robust procedures in place for on-site medical assistance. Project staff have first aid training and carry comprehensive medical kits and communication systems such as radios, ensuring the health and safety of our travellers even in remote locations.

Similarly, our on-the-ground support team in Africa all have first aid training qualifications.

Medical emergencies

These are very rare. But it’s good to know that all our projects are located close to hospitals and that these are of a similar standard to those you’d expect to find in Europe, the US or Australia.

Some of our projects also partner with Safety Africa, an immediate on-site medical support service that works with many of Africa’s leading safari operators.

If required, our project staff can also arrange airlift support in the case of an urgent emergency.

24/7 support team in Africa

Our on-the-ground support team in Africa provides expert care, assistance and advice to all our travellers. We also work closely with our travel and project partners to develop their health and safety procedures.

From sourcing medical-grade equipment to help travellers recover from injury to facilitating hospital visits and keeping families back home informed, we go above and beyond to make sure nobody feels alone or unsupported when it matters most.

Trusted transport providers

We only work with transport providers we know and trust and maintain regular contact with them at all times across multiple channels, including WhatsApp.

You’ll find yourself travelling only during daylight hours, on vehicles of the same quality as you’d expect to find in Europe, the US or Australia, making your transfers safer and more reliable.

All our drivers are highly experienced at navigating remote locations and know the best routes to get there - even if they have to deal with issues like flooding or transport disruption. They also hold all the proper licenses (including Professional Driving Permits which require police clearance) meaning you can rest assured the person behind the wheel is qualified, trustworthy, and fully insured with Public Liability Insurance and Passenger Liability Insurance.

What’s more, you’ll have a member of our dedicated in-country support team looking out for you throughout your whole journey. Thanks to these details, we’ve had zero road safety incidents since we were founded in 1999.

Safeguarding school and college groups

We understand how important safeguarding is for school, college and university field trips.

At all times, we make sure students are in the presence of at least one staff member. If the group needs to be split into two or more vehicles during transfers or activities, we ensure there is always at least one school or college staff member seated in each vehicle. We also ensure students only share accommodation with other students of the same gender, with staff staying separately but nearby.

We will discuss all your safeguarding requirements at length prior to booking to ensure all your needs are met to the highest standard.

A proactive approach

Before your booking is finalised, we will ask you about any fitness or medical issues to ensure you’re matched with suitable projects. We also check on any dietary requirements and allergies you may have to ensure there are no issues with your meals or surroundings.
