Conservation vacations in Africa

Making your adventure count

Not every trip needs to be long to be life-changing. Wildlife short breaks are designed for travellers who are short on time but want the same immersive experience as someone embarking on an epic adventure. Whether you have a week or 10 days, every experience of ours is carefully curated to maximise both immersion and impact. You might find yourself observing elephant behaviour in remote bush areas, assisting with conservation research on giraffe, or helping to rehabilitate injured wildlife such as rhino. These trips offer a rare opportunity to experience Africa’s incredible wildlife while actively contributing to its protection. It’s not just about seeing the animals, but about understanding their world.

To help you learn about wildlife conservation in Africa on a deeper level, our conservation vacations are intentionally small-group and led by passionate experts. It's an authentic experience without the crowds, as on day one you're embedded in real conservation projects, gaining access to places and perspectives that most travellers never see. Wildlife short breaks give you the chance to step off the beaten track and discover a different side of Africa’s natural heritage.

Wildlife short breaks with long-lasting goals

Our experiences are active, not passive, and so is your contribution. Every day, you'll be participating in real efforts that protect Africa's ecosystems and species. Our projects align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we are affiliated with leading global organisations like WWF and the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), and our most popular wildlife trips have been featured in acclaimed publications such as Lonely Planet and National Geographic.

Our short breaks to Africa are known to attract people who want more than just seeing the Big Five. They want memories. They want purpose. They want to be part of a conservation success story.

And you don't need to be a scientist to have an impact, to give back, to ensure your wildlife trip goes beyond the surface level. You just need to be a curious traveller with a passion for nature, a willingness to get involved, and a couple of days available.

FAQs

What is a wildlife short break?

This is a compact, high-impact travel experience focused on Africa’s iconic wildlife. Unlike standard safaris, these trips go beyond observation and give you the chance to participate in real conservation work, alongside expert teams.

How long are these short wildlife trips?

Most of our wildlife short breaks last up to 2 weeks maximum, making them ideal for travellers with limited time. If you would like a longer trip, we also offer Longer Wildlife Adventures.

Is this suitable for first-time visitors to Africa?

Yes! Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, a conservation vacation offers a unique way to connect and discover Africa. You don’t need any special skills - just curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to learn.

What kind of conservation work will I be doing?

Depending on the project, you may assist with wildlife monitoring, habitat restoration, or animal care and husbandry. Don't worry - you’ll always be guided by professionals, ensuring your efforts make a genuine contribution.

Is this a good safari alternative?

If you're looking for something more meaningful, then yes. These trips still offer unforgettable wildlife sightings, but with the added bonus of learning, involvement, and real impact.

A safari is usually about observing wildlife for enjoyment, photography, or education. While safaris can offer valuable experiences, the best interests of wildlife and ecosystems are not always the main priority.

Our trips go further and combine meaningful travel with direct and measurable contributions to conservation. Rather than being a passive observer, you play an active role through hands-on participation and financial support - assisting with research, restoring habitats, supporting rehabilitation, and funding local conservation staff - ensuring your experience delivers real benefits for wildlife, ecosystems, and communities.

Where in Africa do these short wildlife experiences take place?

Our short breaks take place across southern Africa. Each destination offers incredible wildlife, landscapes, and unique conservation challenges and opportunities.

How do I plan a short break to Africa?
