We dedicated two weeks to volunteering, first at the Okavango Wilderness Research Project, and then at Golola Rhino Orphanage. Everything went perfectly, and it was a truly extraordinary experience.
At the Okavango project in Botswana, we lived in an unfenced base camp, fully immersed in nature, monitoring wildlife in the vast expanse of the ecosystem. It was an intense and authentic experience.
We were accompanied by three exceptional guides, friendly, responsible, and highly knowledgeable, and with whom we immediately formed a wonderful connection.
The rain was abundant, and on four occasions, our vehicle got stuck, but that too is part of Africa: a small inconvenience that made the adventure even more real and memorable.
The following week at Golola Rhino Orphanage in South Africa was just as special. We had the absolute privilege of living in close contact with rhinos rescued from poaching. It was meaningful and deeply moving. The project staff were amazing people, skilled and deeply committed to conservation. Together, we experienced intense and adventurous moments, taking in the passion and dedication of those who devote their lives to protecting threatened wildlife.
One aspect that is particularly important to us is that we are both 72 years old: this experience showed us that, even at an older age, it is still possible to make a real and valuable contribution.
If you are in good health and have a bit of adaptability, you should not hesitate to embark on an adventure like this.
Finally, we would like to sincerely thank African Conservation Experience for the excellent organisation and for the extraordinary and noble cause they pursue with such dedication.
We return home with hearts full of gratitude, unforgettable memories, and the awareness of having taken part in something truly important.
