Dust kicked up behind our open air vehicle as we bounced down the dirt road. I'm in Africa - the realisation hit me. Just a few hours ago African Conservation Experience (ACE) had met me at the airport and helped me board my plane to the Phinda Wildlife Research Project.
I can’t accurately describe my experience, words just don't seem to match what I saw and felt. Each day was an adventure. I learned so much - it was more than I expected.
Our guide was incredible - he seemed to know everything about, well… everything!
From the scientific names of trees to the types of insects that called them home. He could spot minute details and explain why they were important.
And conservation is so complicated. There are some that firmly believe in one solution where another has an equally valid solution. There are so many aspects to consider.
This was real hard work. It rained whilst I was there and the guys still went out to do their work.
This was a real project. This was the real deal.
I learned so much just by listening and have such respect for the rangers and anti-poaching teams.
I have always wanted to see lions and the moment I saw them in person was indescribable. They are massive, majestic, and even more graceful than you could ever imagine. Their movements are so sleek, and those eyes…
We also saw the most elusive creature of all - the pangolin. To think that this scaley little guy is the most trafficked mammal is crazy. To know that we directly contributed to its survival by volunteering is pretty powerful.
This trip was a dream trip of mine and to look back at the list of sightings I had is phenomenal. I saw rhino, elephant (and them playing in the water is a sight I won't forget!), as well as leopard. We had at least four sightings! How incredible is that!
It was amazing. I absolutely loved it, thank you. I have memories that I don't think I'll ever forget. It exceeded my expectations.
My expectations were maybe to go try and help the Phinda team, see wildlife, take great photos, then be able to share it with family etc. And just contribute to the conservation mission. But, I did all that and more!
Thanks to the ACE team, I could let go, trust completely, and focus on my trip - fully supported every step of the way.
This was a trip of a lifetime and I am so thankful I made the decision to do this. If you are unsure about travelling - don't be. Just do it. You will be so glad you did!
