A massive thank you to the whole team at African Conservation Experience (ACE)! I was initially unsure who to partner with for my volunteer experience, but ACE came up trumps over and over in the initial research.
They ticked all the boxes in relation to reputation and impact, organised multiple calls to answer all the questions I had, and helped design the exact trip I didn’t know I wanted!
I had three weeks up my sleeve and decided to go with the Umsele Field Conservation Project. Although it was a relatively new project, I was attracted to the variety of the research and the fact that it was at ground zero, with an exciting remit and the opportunity to see conservation research happening in real time!
What I experienced went well beyond what I could have hoped for.
There is something incredibly special about being out in the bush each day, not simply observing it, but contributing in a small way to the research and conservation work being done to protect it.
I learned an enormous amount and was blown away by the depth of knowledge of the project team. I came away with an even greater appreciation for the complexity of conservation and the people who dedicate their lives to it.
The passion and commitment of the Umsele team is inspiring. The sacrifices they make to protect the bush they love so much are exceptional.
Honestly though, aside from the conservation work and the wildlife, the people were the best part. The other volunteers, the project team, and the staff at the camp who ensured we were fed, warm, and looked after made this trip a truly unforgettable and unique experience.
There was a wonderful sense of camaraderie, shared purpose, and genuine connection that I hadn’t anticipated and will really miss.
I can’t wait for my next one! Thank you, ACE. My heart is full.
