My month volunteering in South Africa was genuinely one of the most meaningful and life-changing experiences, and I owe so much of that to African Conservation Experience (ACE).

From my very first conversation with one of the ACE team members, it was clear that this wasn't going to be a one-size-fits-all volunteering experience. They took the time to really understand my interests, passions, and curiosities, to carefully tailor a four-week conservation journey for me that couldn't have been a better fit. ACE truly understood the assignment and delivered beyond anything I could have imagined.

My first two weeks at Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre were some of the most emotional and unforgettable days I've ever experienced. Every day was filled with purpose, from preparing feeds and cleaning enclosures to witnessing firsthand the incredible dedication of conservation professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes. Being part of the release of four vultures back into the wild after recovering from poisoning caused by poachers is a moment that will stay with me forever.

The final two weeks at the Golola Rhino Orphanage and Rehabilitation Centre were equally impactful.

Spending time with orphaned and injured rhinos, hearing their stories, and witnessing the resilience of these animals was both heartbreaking and inspiring.

I had the privilege of feeding a one-month-old rhino calf daily, witnessed a rhino relocation, and even helped support the fitting of a moon boot (a rigid boot supporting the foot and ankle to prevent further injury and aid with recovery) for a rhino recovering from a devastating injury.

These are experiences I never thought I'd have and memories I'll carry with me for the rest of my life.

What stood out throughout the entire month wasn't just the animals, but the people. The passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment shown by every member of staff at both projects was incredibly inspiring.

ACE's commitment to only working with ethical, impactful conservation projects was evident at every stage of my journey.

As a solo traveller, having ACE's support was invaluable. The South African ACE team, in particular, were absolutely fantastic. They regularly checked in, provided clear transfer itineraries, and made what could have felt daunting in a foreign country feel seamless and stress-free.

Knowing there was always someone looking out for me gave me so much confidence and allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience.

I cannot recommend ACE highly enough. They created an experience that perfectly aligned with me, introduced me to incredible people, and gave me memories, friendships, and perspectives that will stay with me forever. If you're considering a conservation volunteering experience and want something ethical, meaningful, and genuinely life-changing, ACE is the perfect choice.
