This trip was for me - I worked hard to save up and it was worth every cent.
As the oldest, I generally take charge when we travel. I keep track of everything and make sure my siblings are happy. I have always wanted to travel to Africa and decided to do this trip solo. Just for me. I wanted to let that responsibility go and with African Conservation Experience (ACE) I could do that.
They met me at the airport and helped check me in for my flight to Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
It was two weeks of hard work, laughter and amazing animals!
As soon as you arrive they do the tour and explain the background of the long term residents. You suddenly realise just how big some of these animals are!
Each day is similar but completely different. You clean enclosures and prepare meals but you never know what will happen. Each day new patients come in and plans for release are made. So much work goes into each animal! We had so many chances to see new patients and we never felt left out. You are included from the moment you arrive. The staff really appreciated the help and made you feel so welcome.
And this trip opened my eyes so much!
With Moholoholo, they keep improving the facilities, enrichment activities, and their care for the animals. You know they value each life.
When I get home, my life will change. I have to join the military for a while. I want to use that experience to come back and be even more helpful. I am considering learning more about anti-poaching work. I want to protect animals. I want to make an impact.
ACE helped me have an experience I won’t forget. I can’t wait to travel again and can’t wait to see what new projects ACE has in the future!
